SPANISH WINES SHINE IN THE INTERNATIONAL GRENACHE SIMPOSIUM IN RHONEJune 08, 2010

The Wine Academy of Spain will sponsor the official dinner, where wines from Bodegas Nekeas and Domaines Lupier from Navarra, Portal del Montsant from Priorat, Baigorri from Rioja, Terrazas del Moncayo and Coto de Hayas from Campo de Borja will be served.

Madrid, 4th of June, 2010 – Grenache specialists from all over the world gather in The French region of the Rhone. They will be studying, discussing and analyzing this variety, also largely used in Spain by wine producers. Spanish wines will be getting tremendous exposure in this first edition of International Grenache Simposium together with a panel of experts such as Michel Chapoutier, Stephen Henschke, Pierre Perrin from Ch. de Beaucastel, Steven Spurrier, Michel Bettane, Charles Metcalfe, Tim Atkin, Chester Osborne, Christopher Cannan or Zelma Long.

The Wine Academy of Spain will participate in this event by sponsoring the gala dinner and with a speech by Pancho Campo MW, founder and president of the Academy. The dinner will be accompanied by a selection of Grenache wines chosen by The Wine Academy, such as Bodegas Nekeas and Domaines Lupier from DO Navarra, Portal del Montsant from Priorat, Baigorri from DOC Rioja, Terrazas del Moncayo and Coto de Hayas from DO Campo de Borja.

Furthermore, Pancho Campo MW will be introducing the conference Critics and Media: Grenache According to its Experts. This conference will take place on the first day of the symposium and media from the wine industry as well as wine enthusiasts and wine buyers will participate. The round table will consist of well-known personalities in the wine industry such as Quim Vila, Alfredo Arribas, Alvaro Palacios, Enrique Basarte, Telmo Rodriguez, Montse Nadal and Concha Vecino.

The president of TWA will moderate the meeting where there will also be a debate on emerging markets, new consumer markets, current market analysis in demographic and geographic terms, definition of new consumer profiles, etc.

Throughout the symposium, there will be interventions from relevant personalities in the industry, such as Tim Atkin MW, British wine writer and critic; Neil Beckett, editor of Fine Wine Magazine; Bernard Burtschy, wine writer for Le Figaro; Abi Duhr, owner of Château Pauqué; Michael Fridjhon, South African wine critic; Christelle Guibert, director of Cata and writer for Decanter; Yukari Iwashiro, Japanese wine educator and journalist; Neal Martin, editor of Eparker; François Gauss, president and founder of Grand Jury Européen; Charles Metcalfe, British host in IWC; and Josh Raynolds, from International Wine Cellar.

This international gathering takes place in order to focus on the necessity of establishing guidelines for this varietal, which, as other initiatives that have taken place subsequently, had its origin in Winefuture-Rioja’09.

The Wine Academy of Spain

The Wine Academy of Spain is a private organization, founded in 2003 by Pancho Campo MW, the only Spaniard to hold a Master Of Wine title. The Wine Academy of Spain concentrates mainly in the education of professionals and enthusiasts in the wine industry through its Spanish Wine Education programme. It also promotes Spain as a wine tourism destination; climate change and its impact on the wine industry and study trips to wine producing regions in collaboration with the University of California Davis in the United States. Furthermore, it implements Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) courses all over Spain and has organized The World Congress on Climate Change and Wine, and Winefuture-Rioja’09. Pancho Campo has also been the commissioner for Vinoble 2010.
