Madrid, 20th May 2010 –The Wine Academy of Spain was present last weekend at the meeting between the President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera and more than fifty Chilean business people living in Spain and Spaniards with an interest in Chile.
Pancho Campo MW and his wife Melissa Butler attended the reception representing The Wine Academy of Spain, as President and Chairman of the Board respectivelly. The event was a cocktail in honour of the new President of Chile, the honourable Sebastian Piñera. It was held prior to the Latin American-Europe Summit, which took place in Madrid at the beginning of May. During the gathering organized at the residence of the Ambassador of Chile to Spain, the President spoke to the businessmen about Hispano-Chilean interests in various economic areas. “We also talked about wine, and exchanged opinions about the Carménère grape, which despite its French origins, has become the emblematic variety of Chile”, explains Campo.
The Chilean Ambassador to Spain, Sergio Romero highlighted the importance of Pancho Campo in the wine industry by being the first and only Spanish and Chilean Master of Wine. The Ambassador and the Manager of Pro-Chile Manuel Valencia thanked Pancho for the support of TWAS showed towards the victims of the earthquake and the Chilean wine industry. The event was attended by, amongst others, Miguel Torres, as well as other personalities such as politicians, ministers and senators, members of the media, as well as members of the arts such as Mario Vargas Llosa, who accompanied President Piñera at the aforementioned Summit.
As a result of this meeting, The Wine Academy has confirmed that they will organize a visit to Chile at the end of 2010 with the support of Wines of Chile, “to lend a hand to the Chilean wine community, to promote the activities of The Wine Academy and to visit numerous wineries”. In this trip, Campo will offer several lectures and will also lead a Grand Tasting of Chilean and Spanish wines Tasting, with wines.
The Wine Academy of Spain
The Wine Academy of Spain is a private organisation founded in 2003 by Pancho Campo MW, the only Spaniard to hold the title of Master of Wine. It focuses its activities on the education of wine professionals and aficionados; the international promotion of Spanish wine, through its Spanish Wine Education Programme; the promotion of Spain as a destination for wine tourism; the analysis of the impact of climate change on the industry; and study trips to wine producing regions, with the collaboration of the University of California Davis (USA).
